Description

We like the REI Co-op Magma Trail Quilt for the same reasons we like the Magma Sleeping Bags – it’s a good value for a basic ultralight product. Constructed with 850 fill power hydrophobic down and 15D ripstop nylon, it epitomizes great-not-best. Weight: 19 oz Price: $329 Down: 850 fill power RDS goose down with DWR Fill Weight: 10.5 oz Fabric: Pertex Quantum 15D Ripstop Nylon Pros: Ultralight. Good warmth-to-weight. Good value. Cons: Only comfortable down to 40F. Overuse of horizontal baffles. Features The Magma Trail Quilt uses a mixture of horizontal baffling to the waist height, at which point it switches to vertical baffling to reduce cold spots caused by gravity-induced plume drift/bunching. However, it is our opinion this has two too many horizontal baffles, which could create cold spots for side sleepers with wide hips. One of REI Co-op Magma Trail Quilt’s greatest strength is its low weight (19oz) relative to its value-oriented price point ($329). However, it achieves that in part by being a 30 degree quilt, and saves cost by requiring less down. This one is comfortable down to about 40F, or just below. Great for summer or if you don’t mind sleeping in your puffy jacket. That makes it the least warm quilt in this entire guide. We strive to only include quilts ranging from 15-25 degree named ratings because that is the most universally useful lower limit temp rating. But since REI does not sell a 20 degree version of this quilt (we wish they would!), we figured it was still worth including. Verdict Still though, Magma is a very good quilt at a great price point, and an exceptionally deal and quality product if you are a warm sleeper and or shopping specifically for a 30 degree quilt that would be comfortable down to a bit below 40F.
